District 1 County Commissioner News
- Current Term(through Dec. 31, 2024 or until a successor is in place)
- A call for a Special Election will go into the legal organ of the county anytime between 30-60 days after the vacancy.
- Qualification will be open to any candidate to fill the current term vacancy.
- Qualification dates will be August 19-August 21, 2024. 9am-5pm Monday and Tuesday. 9am-12pm on Wednesday. To be held at the Putnam County Board of Elections, 117 Putnam Drive, Suite D, Eatonton, GA 31024.
- Qualification amount was set at the Board of Commissioner’s meeting on June 25th, 2024 in the amount of $234.00.
- Qualification location, dates, times, and costs will also be posted in the legal organ of the county.
- The Special Election to fill the current term vacancy will be held on the November 5th, 2024 General Election ballot.
- Next Term(2025-2028) Special Primary and Special Election
- Special Primary-
- Since Mr. McElhenney was the only candidate, both in the primary and on the upcoming November General Election for the next term, we will hold a new primary, referred to as a Special Primary. Since Mr. McElhenney won his primary and he ran as a Republican, this Special Primary will only be open to Republican candidates to qualify.
- The call for the Special Primary will go into the legal organ of the county anytime before 29 days before the election. We will very likely do that far in advance of the deadline.
- Qualification will only be open to Republican candidates.
- Qualification dates will be September 9-September 11, 2024. 9am-5pm Monday and Tuesday. 9am-12pm on Wednesday. To be held at the Putnam County Board of Elections, 117 Putnam Drive, Suite D, Eatonton, GA 31024.
- Qualification amount was set at the Board of Commissioner’s meeting on June 25th, 2024 in the amount of $234.00.

- The next available time to hold the Special Primary, will be also November 5th, 2024.

- This Special Primary will be on separate equipment from the November General Election and may even be held in a separate room at your polling place.

- Special Election to fill the NEXT term:
- A call for the Special Election will go into the legal organ of the county anytime before 29 days before the election. We will very likely do that far in advance of the deadline.
- Write in candidates to run in opposition of the Republican that wins the November 5th Special Primary/Dec 3rd Special Primary Runoff(if needed) must file and publish their intention of candidacy no earlier than January 1(2024) and no later than the Tuesday after the first Monday in September(2024) prior to the election. The candidate will file their notice of candidacy with the Election Supervisor. The candidate will publish their notice in the legal organ of the county. The candidate shall also file with the Election Supervisor a copy of the notice as published with an affidavit stating that the notice has been published and including the name of the newspaper and the date of publication, no later than the fifth day after the deadline for filing and publishing such notice.
- Due to the need to hold the Special Primary, the next available date to hold the Special Election to fill the NEXT term will be the third Tuesday in March 2025.

The mission of the Putnam County Board of Elections and Registration is to conduct elections in Putnam County in accordance with federal and state laws so that each and every citizen has had a fair, impartial, and efficient opportunity to register and exercise the right to vote; and each candidate for office has had a fair, impartial, and efficient opportunity to qualify for and to seek office.
Voter Registrations are open through October 7, 2024. Anyone that wants to register to vote, change their voter registration address, or change the name on their voter registration can come by the office and obtain a voter registration card or fill out an online voter registration application.
